Gemstones are the result of regular stones being exposed to intense concentrations of essence over long periods, transforming them into beautiful shapes and colours sought after for both jewelry and occult properties. Gemstones are usually found underground, along the courses of Dragon Lines, and the exact nature of a gemstone is determined by the mixtures and intensities of essence involved in its creation.

Because of their origins through essence, gemstones are thought to have certain occult properties, influencing the essence flows of those who bear them in subtle ways. These properties make the stones valuable to thaumaturges and artificers, though most gemstones are not on their own sufficient to work as Exotic Components.

During the days of the Shogunate, vast smelter-manses distilled and concentrated hundreds of tonnes of gemstones into small vials of liquid gem for use by Dragonblooded artificers in creation of exotic components, but the infrastructure required to carry out such tasks on the monumental scale required has been lost to Creation.
