Peleps Caval is an elder male Water-aspected Senator of the House Peleps Deliberative caucus, and husband of fellow Senator Cathak Matarin. He is recognizable to many for his distinctive tortoiseshell shield, the artifact known as the Shell of Ambiguity, borne constantly on his back. Caval maintains a tonsured head out of respect to the Immaculate Faith, though few consider him particularly devout. Caval served a short term in the Imperial Navy, leading a unit of marine commandos in operations in the Scavenger Lands, and later served as an advisor to various Southern satrapies as an official of the Foreign Office. He was also personally involved with development on the Daoshin Peninsula, where a settlement founded on property leased him by the Scarlet Empress (Port Caval, which bears his name) has served as a major shipping point for operations of the Ministry of Renewal.

Caval has been a longtime fixture in the Deliberative, lobbying for votes and organizing coalitions to ensure the passage of legislation, though some have remarked that he is motivated more by the art of politics than by any particular policy agenda. He has known to be energetic in the debate, and his nickname the ‘Purple Turtle’ hails from his mottled face as he becomes particularly enraged. Most recently, he is known to have engineered the replacement of Cathak Jareng as Guardian of Discourse by Peleps Illithe following the death of Tepet Serekan, and was a key ally of Sesus Tegra on her ascent to Mistress of the Deliberative. Though in recent years he has been less involved in such manipulations, he is known to serve as mentor of sorts to caucus fixer Peleps Staemos.

A supporter of Thousand Scales programs, and the validity of the Senate itself as the Realm’s legislative organ, Caval has little policy agreement with his spouse senator Matarin, and many of their thundrous clashes in the Greater Chamber are widely remembered for both eloquence and ferocity... but unlike many Senate pairings, their household remains close-knit and fruitful, with numerous children and grandchildren now serving in the Imperial Legions and Thousand Scales.
