The East 9th Ward is one of the many Ward Districts of the Imperial City. It is a roughly square section of the city, walled and connected to surrounding wards by gates which can be sealed in the event of unrest so collective punishment can be meted out to the community which birthed such shameful rebellion. The East 9th is known primarily for its woodcarvers.

Notable Landmarks

Black Gates (C): Gates operated by the Guardians of the Realm, leading between wards. The East 9th has 4: North to the East 39th Ward, West to the East 8th Ward, South to the East 12th Ward, and East to the East 54th Ward.

Tarn Tenements (B): Apartment buildings rented to residents, overseen by Thesk Tarn.

Bleeding Ruby Teahouse (A): A teahouse and tavern, the most popular in the ward. Its name comes from the use of poor-quality lacquer for the roof tiles when it was built, attempting to give them a vibrant red colour. The lacquer liquefied under the first heavy rain, and the red colour ran down the walls of the building and the surrounding streets before properly hardening, leaving the appearance of bleeding through to the present day. The Teahouse is a rowdy place, with an upper floor for patricians to escape the rabble. It is overseen by the patrician landlord Thesk Tarn.

Spolumbo Meats (V): Cured meat shop, part of the holdings of the Dynast Nellens Spolumbo. It flies the patent mark of House Nellens.

Golden Griddle (?): Cheap eatery, serving up fried eggs and potato-leek griddle cakes to Ward residents.

Hopping Hops House (U): Local brewery, supplying mostly light beers. Overseen by Thesk Tarn.

Chisel and Saw Quarry (G): Stonecarvers’ workshop of moderate size, operated by the Gadugi family of citizens. Recently suffered closure for violating Immaculate strictures, but has since been re-opened.

Violet Brush and Ink (N): This shop is owned by an elderly artisan named Gakou, a skilled calligrapher and brush carver who sells brushes, ink and paper; both for writing and artwork. He also makes copies of paintings and calligraphy pieces by demand and it is said that his work is of excellent quality.

Zhoutarn Diligent Printery (D): Newly opened shop on the former site of a taphouse and property office, specializing in carving woodblock prints and producing broadsheets. Overseen by the patrician Thesk Tarn and the Dynast Sesus Zhoutai. It flies the patent mark of the Dochao household (of House Sesus).

Ukino House of Print (E): woodblock print shop, closed down and stripped of its contents by order of the 4th Imperial Legion.

The Painted Log (F): Woodcarver’s shop, specializing in lacquered wood figures, available in a variety of poses and colours. Custom work can also be done, though this can take some weeks and is quite a bit more costly. With the arrival of the 4th Imperial Legion in the City, the Painted Log has seen brisk business with two new figures: one a giant officer with horns of flame, the other a lancer riding a lion-horse.

Carving & Carpentry (X): Woodcarver's shop specializing in boards and furniture.

Boards & More Boards (Y): Woodcarver's shop with a small printery, specializing in card, tile, and board games, such as Dragon-draughts or Gateway, though the latter is not popular amongst the simpler minds of the poorer classes.

Coopers of Devotion (T): Barrel-maker & pottery kiln for clay cups and jugs. Overseen by Thesk Tarn.

Impeccable Carpentry (X): Woodcarver's shop, now closed.

9th Ward Sheperding (L): Building and expanse of sickly grass where sheep are raised to provide local residents with sheep's milk (and associated cheese), wool, and occasionally mutton. Overseen by Thesk Tarn.

Coop of the East 9th (M): Large building and fenced area where chickens are raised to produce eggs and poultry for locals. The tenements in the area are afflicted by the terrible stink and flies that come from such an operation, as well as its loud noises, making them the least popular residences in the East 9th.

East Corner Manor (P): Large patrician-owned residence, surrounded by a high stone wall.

Park of Song in the Evening (J): Public park, with trees and a pond, for the enjoyment of ward residents. Sponsored by Thesk Tarn.

Minor Businesses and public features: The East 9th is home to a large number of small enterprises for serving its residents, including 8 produce stands (O), 4 grain & legume stands (Q), 4 bakeries (R), and 4 noodle stands (S). Additionally, the Ward is home to an Immaculate Pavilion (I) for religious ceremonies, a bathhouse (H), and a small Thousand Scales office (K).
