Wolverspiderine

The wolverspiderine is a fierce creature of the far Eastern forests, found most commonly in areas where Creation and the Wyld come into contact. It is a stocky, muscled beast (comparable in size to a bear cub or large dog), covered in reddish fur striped with black. Eight short limbs extend from its body, each ending in three long claws. These claws can partially retract when the creature is moving on the ground or climbing, extending to their full length when it engages in combat. At its rear, glands and spinnerets allow it to spin a web, much like a spider, which it uses mostly to lower itself from tree branches onto prey.

Wolverspiderines are technically omnivorous, consuming eggs and certain plants, but with a preference for meat, both scavenging carrion and killing live prey. They are willing to confront creatures both large and small, often dropping from branches to ambush their victims. While some savants have theorized they are Wyld-tainted creatures, their aggressive natures seem particularly intense when they encounter the Fair Folk, whom they will attack incessantly with tooth and claw, even though there is little nourishment to be had from such victims. One of the few plants the wolverspiderine consumes is Ironbush, and in areas where this plant is plentiful the claws of wolverspiderines can come to affect the Fae in the same manner as Iron. This, combined with powerful muscles and remarkably quick healing, make the wolverspiderine dangerous to both the Fae and anything else which might raise its ire.

While normally dwelling on Creation’s edges, wolverspiderines have become increasingly common in the forests of the Northeast, around Halta, perhaps attracted by the presence of Fair Folk in the region. The Haltans have found, with ‘indisputable certainty’ that the creatures are dangerous, incapable of becoming san-beasts, and ought be killed on sight for the safety of all, but attitudes amongst the tribes on the edges of Creation are more varied… some hunt the wolverspiderine, valuing its claws for making weapons, while others ritually offer the creature support by laying out carcasses to encourage wolverspiderines to venture near.
