Pelican

Pelicans are large white birds with long orange bills, notable for the huge pouch attached to the lower beak. Residing along the coasts of the Inner Sea and the larger islands of the West, pelicans nest on the ground in large gregarious colonies, and spend much of their time swimming or soaring, with more powerful flight usually undertaken close to the surface of the water. Pelicans subsist on a diet made up mostly of fish, which they scoop up from the water in their bills before expelling the water and swallowing their prey.

Within the secret rites of the Cult of the Illuminated, the head of the pelican is an oft-used symbol… while too iconic to escape scrutiny on the Blessed Isle or elsewhere the Immaculate Order holds sway, in other regions it can be worn openly without attracting the flames of Immaculate zealotry upon its bearers. As a symbol, it is said to represent love and self-sacrifice, for the pelican is said to be a devoted and protective parent defending its young against danger and privation… in truth, and in the secret compartments of certain pieces of statuary, the Cult holds that the pouch of the Pelican contains the Solar symbol of the Shining Ones, protecting their followers and waiting for the day it may open and reveal their light to Creation.
