Cynis Barat was an Air-aspected Dynast of House Cynis, granddaughter of Cynis Belar. Married to Cynis Hurkon, she mothered a brood including Cynis Seijika, Cynis Dythora and Cynis Kitara, with numerous descendants of their own. Among her grandchildren are Cynis Hinoke and Cynis Hibare.
Barat served in the 1st Imperial Legion for many years, long considered the matriarch of the Imperial City's Red Lantern District. Following her retirement, she was appointed to the Deliberative Senate and participated in several Wyld Hunts, one of which claimed her life several decades ago. In the wake of this her daughter Seijika was elevated to her Deliberative seat, and her husband Hurkon took post as master of the Red Lanterns.
