In a Celestial Bureaucracy with a love of ornate and complex titles for its myriad posts & offices, there exists a department known only by a single word, ‘Index’.
This office, within the Division of Secrets in the Bureau of Destiny, is tasked with keeping a listing of the information held within the Forbidding Manse of Ivy... indexing nigh-innumerable tomes and scrolls, along with their contents. Given the sheer volume of knowledge it stores, such an index is vital to the work of the Division, and the position of its Keeper is powerful indeed, much struggled for over the centuries. Some speak that perhaps this is in part because it allows the Division’s head Nara-O to redirect the energies of potential rivals against each other, but the Hundred Veils has never humoured such suggestions.
The current Keeper of Indices is Luxana, god of Recorded Knowledge, who carries out most of the work with assistance of her Librarian Spirits and assures that all knowledge in the Forbidding Manse is set out in written form. Her work is considered excellent, though Index does not share its indices directly outside the Division, a welcome change from her predecessors: Circling Rage, god of oral histories, had secured the post as the infrastructure of Creation crumbled during the Shogunate Era, but had jealously guarded the Index’ contents even against members of the Division of Secrets, before Nara-O and Luxana colluded to oust him in the wake of the Great Contagion. His own predecessor, Chamber of the Void god of textual scholarship, had fallen into corruption in the wake of the Usurpation, allowing gaps and missing documents to disrupt the utility of the Index before his ouster.
