Bal Lancer was a water-aspected member of the Bal clan of Patricians in the Scarlet Empire, who served for a century as an official within the Enlightened Regulators of Essence Engineering. A longtime associate of V'neef Mahara, Lancer was well regarded for his knowledge of zither music and Shogunate theatrical forms, particularly his mastery of the role of Guo Ziyi in plays such as Palace of Eternal Life and Hitting the Heiress while Drunk.
Lancer had long been a rival of Mnemon Venena, a member of his graduating class at the Spiral Academy, and in RY761 is thought to have composed a short comedic scene in Shogunate style to mock her as both competed for the Minister's desk, The Jewelry Box.
Bal Lancer died in RY763, after contracting a terrible plague from a theatrical folio he had purchased from a Threshold scavenger lord that caused his skin to fall off, resulting in death three days later.
