Sea Cloak

The sea cloak is an octopus native to the oceans of the West, particularly the warmer waters of the Southwest. It is a strange creature, thought by some to be touched by the Wyld, little understood by the savants of Creation.

The most well-known version of the sea cloak is a large octopus, growing to three times the height of a grown human. Their name comes from the ‘cloak’ of webbing which connects several of the tentacles. For swimmers and sailors, as well as smaller sea creatures, the beast is a dark and terrifying presence underwater, enveloping its prey to devour them with its beaked, jagged maw, or unfolding itself to take on a bulky appearance that deters the approach of larger predators.

This is, however, not the only appearance of a Sea Cloak… it is the adult female of the species. Young sea cloaks begin very small, the females growing and developing their cloak-like webbing as they grow older. Males remain miniscule by comparison, only the length of a forefinger. When they mate, the males deliver their seed into the female’s cloak by tearing off a tentacle, which spends its last moment of life crawling along to its destination. The male perishes soon after, and the female carries her eggs under her cloak until her children are ready to emerge.

Sea Cloaks are entirely immune to all forms of poison, including the vitriolic toxins of the Yozi Realms, perhaps a blessing from Kimberry for some long-forgotten amusement. Due to the small size of the young and males, they have been known to make use of poisonous creatures… ripping off jellyfish tentacles or slug spines and employing them as whips and spears to subdue prey so they can be consumed.

Sea Cloaks are uncommon near the inhabited islands of the West, but their immunity to poison makes them a useful component for alchemical concoctions and artifice with similar purpose.
