Metha Tree

The Metha tree is a type of stocky, twisted conifer tree found growing in the coastal swamps of the far Southwestern Threshold. Its sharp, green-yellow needles and cinnamon-coloured trunk (streaked with brighter red during the Wood and Fire seasons) make it easily identifiable amidst the jungle foliage, though it is far from common even within its range.

The bark of the Metha tree is the source of its value. It can be pounded in water to produce a red dye particularly suited to colouring plant fibre textiles such as Hemp clothing. When chewed, the bark reveals an additional use: it is incredibly spicy, but a poor seasoning for food, as within an hour of chewing the user’s entire mouth goes numb, and within two hours their perception of pain and fatigue are completely diminished… for many, this brings a feeling of invulnerability.

However, the feeling is not a reality, and addicts regularly find themselves coming down to the agony of injuries they've sustained whilst numb.
