Martens are slender, agile mammals, found most commonly in the the Northeastern Threshold, and elsewhere across the North where coniferous taiga and colder deciduous forests can be found. They are covered in fur, colour varying from browns to yellows, with bushy tails and semi-retractable claws on their large paws.

Martens are primarily carnivorous. Their diet is made up primarily of rodents, insects, small fish, and the eggs of birds, though they are known to consume nuts and fruit should these be readily available

Martens are not social animals, gathering together only during the Wood season so they can breed. Their kits are born blind and hairless, but grow quickly, and are left by their mother to fend for themselves after only a season.

Martens are a favoured animal by fur trappers for their soft, dense coats, as well as being readily available. Marten fur coats, cloaks, and stoles are common in the Northeastern Threshold, and the balance of quality and price also sees them worn by patricians and wealthy citizens on the Blessed Isle.
