The Kakapo is a large, flightless, nocturnal parrot native to the Islands of the Southwestern Threshold, particularly Bushan. Its feathers are mottled yellow-green, blending with the leaves and moss of the forest floor, with a lighter face of sensitive feathers which allow the bird to feel its way along the ground with head held low to the ground. The bird also has a very keen sense of smell.

Kakapo are herbivores, and generally friendly creatures, though females can be more aggressive when approached. They are poorly equipped to defend themselves against predators not native to their islands, such as dogs and cats.

Local human cultures make use of the kakapo in a variety of different ways. On Bushan and many other islands it is hunted for its meat, which is considered quite flavourful, and for its feathers which are used (still attached to the skin) to create fine cloaks. Some other islands have a far different relationship with the bird, keeping them as pets, where they are said to be friendly and affectionate companions.
