Great Grass Turtles are a herbivore native to the grasslands of the Great Grass Sea in the southeastern Threshold. They are large creatures, over 13ft long and nearly 5m in height, with powerful jaws, beaks, and teeth for chewing through tough grasses, vines, and the lower trunks of trees. They are two tons in weight, with stout powerful limbs, thick scaly skin sprouting coarse fur, and covered over with a thick armoured shell, studded with spikes, to defend them from predators such as Lions, Claw Striders, Soaring Mantises, and Torpor Flies, as well as humans... the latter, however, often prove able to overcome these defenses with traps and tools. Tribes who hunt Great Grass Turtles consume not only their flesh but use their bones and fur, their hollowed shells serving as shelters and housing. In the land of Zipekadol, Great Grass Turtles play an important role in the local military, with the heavy armour worn by their troops formed from the shells.

Great Grass Turtles have some physical similarities with the turtles of the Western seas or the lakes of Creation, and some speak that they exist because the Great Grass Sea is a sea, regardless of water, its plateaus islands and turtles swimming through its waves.
