Frost Root

Frost Root is the name of a Northern flowering plant which blossoms briefly in the month of Ascending Air but lasts only a couple of weeks before it dies out. While in bloom, its flowers are vibrantly bright red and orange, standing out clearly amidst the typical scenery of the Northern winter.

Many tribes will mark the areas that the plant grows or try to harvest it near their dwellings in anticipation of its use. Once the plant flowers and then dies out it must be given a chance to freeze and then harvested within a week's time or else the medicinal extracts dry out of the root. Harvesting the root early heightens the bitterness of the root and provides little to no medicinal value. The root once harvested is ground down into a paste that is then mixed with food or water for ingestion. It has an overwhelmingly bitter taste and is rather difficult to swallow.

If ingested once daily for one week (requiring a single resistance roll Difficulty 1 to stomach the bitterness), the root will double a mortal's rate of healing for that week. Once the week is over, further ingestion of the root will trigger uncontrollable vomiting until the root is disgorged, an effect which lasts for one month before the root can safely be taken again. A failure on the Resistance roll means not enough of the root can be stomached to gain its healing effects, a botch results in vomiting and forces the mortal to wait one month before ingesting again.

Frost Root has no benefit for the Exalted, though the bitterness of ingesting it remains.
