Fly Agaric Mushroom
The Fly Agaric is a mushroom found across Creation, with a distinctive appearance that makes it a favourite of artists seeking to depict an instantly-recognizable fungus. It has a bright white stalk and bright red cap, speckled with white dots or scales.
Fly Agaric is so named due to its utility as an insecticide, mixed with milk and sprinkled over plants to protect them from bugs and animals. Fly Agaric is not considered edible by most, though some cultures will boil the mushrooms and discard the liquid to detoxify them and render them fit for eating.
Fly Agaric is toxic, and can be used as a potent hallucinogen, though this involves some risk: small amounts inflict drowsiness and loss of balance, increasing to distortions of sound and vision, twitching muscles, and chaotic shifting of moods. At its upper levels, those ingesting fly agaric begin to suffer full-blown delirium and agitation and can be fatal. It is not popular as a recreational drug, though not unknown.
Fly Agaric caps begin to fade as they age, turning from red to orange. Their white scales can also be washed off in heavy rains. Because of this they can sometimes be confused with Shogun Mushrooms.
