Calm Serenity

Calm Serenity is the God of Western Peace and Calm Waters, serving under the God of Peace Yo-Ping in the Department of Abstract Matters of the Bureau of Heaven. Calm Serenity is a god of peace through tranquility and restraint... when persons and nations do not rise to violence at the provocations of aggressors, peace has a chance to flourish.

Much like his colleague in the South, Jewel of Prosperity, Calm Serenity’s purview shares its region with an opposite whose divinity is both powerful and aggressive. Siakal, God of Western War, strives for savagery and bloodshed, the opposite of Calm Serenity’s wish for tranquil peace. However, unlike Jewel, Calm Serentiy has attempted to turn Siaka’s own nature against her... in aiding the spread of tales concerning her unrestrained ferocity when her attentions are drawn, the god ensures that the denizens of the West have ample reason to pray for peace.

These efforts, however, are far from uncontested: while calm waters can be welcome, they can also be deadly, for without wind and currents ships might be becalmed and doomed. Amongst Western mortals, divisions in worship can be seen to mirror division between the genders… men in the West, by tradition the sailors and warriors, are more likely to make offerings to the Storm Mothers to stave off storms or to whisper a prayer to the God of Western War as battle approaches, women who are by tradition bound to home and shore pray to the God of Western Peace… sometimes for peace itself, sometimes because if waters remain calm and placid, their spouses cannot sail off to danger and danger cannot close upon their shores.

Uncommon amongst the gods of Yu-Shan, Calm Serenity is known for close ties and respect for the Elemental spirits who are found in his domain, in particular the Water Gardeners, to whom the god offered sanctuary when their own courts fell to the attacks of the Air Elementals. In the present age, the Gardners serve as Calm Serenity’s agents in Creation and supplement his office in Yu Shan.
