Truffles are the fruiting body of certain subterranean mushrooms, most often found amidst the roots of trees.

Truffles are perhaps the most valued of all edible fungi in Creation, fetching high prices at market. They are exceedingly difficult to locate, though some professional hunters train swine, who seem suited to detecting their buried locations.

Truffles have an earthy, complex flavour prized by chefs as a garnish for all manner of dishes. An oil can also be extracted for use as a flavouring.

There are several varieties of truffles:

White Truffles: Ivory coloured with brown marbling, these are the most valued truffles. They are incredibly rare, found in only small quantities each year and only in the Northeastern Threshold states of Linowa, Fallen Lapis, Rokan-jin, and Talinin. The War with the Bull has disrupted almost the entirety of the harvesting and distribution for white truffles, and this is unlikely to change: the Bull has reportedly been directing intensive agriculture in his conquered lands to support his armies, while his Haltan allies spread heavy forests, both environments completely inhospitable to white truffles.

One pound of white truffles is an R5 purchase, available only in the markets
of Rubylak, Nexus, and the Imperial City.

Black Truffles: Black coloured, these are the most common truffles, found growing in the East, in the vicinity of Greyfalls. Unlike other truffles, the black variety have been successfully cultivated, though this remains difficult. House Nellens has been directing such efforts, exporting some thirty tons annually from Greyfalls to the Blessed Isle.

One pound of black truffles is an R4 purchase, available in Greyfalls and most trade
cities outside the Scavenger Lands.

Burgundy Truffles: Not quite so valued as white truffles, but far more than black, burgundy truffles are a red-brown colour and native to only a few states in the coastal Northeastern Threshold, including Azerban, Madura, Ceben, Valis, and Calin. Their aroma has hints of hazelnuts.
