Fish-of-the-Land mushrooms are a fungus native to the Blessed Isle. Their brown caps are distinctive, shaped with a honeycomb-like array of valleys and ridges. They favour forests, growing particularly well in the aftermath of forest fires.


Fish-of-the-Land are highly prized in cooking, their name coming from resemblance to a fish when cut lengthwise and fried. Their flavour is said to be amongst the best of all mushrooms, and few who gather them consume them: instead they are sold to high-paying chefs cooking for the tables of the wealthy, particularly the Dynasts of the Realm.


When cooked, simpler is considered better, as long soaking or cooking erodes their prized flavour. They can be dried to keep longer, and are usually rehydrated in milk before preparation. Though not poisonous, they are not considered good when eaten raw, as they intensify the intoxicating effects of Alcohol.
