The 4th Imperial Legion was amongst the first Legions founded by order of the Scarlet Empress as of RY40. In its first years, it numbers amongst the 5 Legions known as the Imperial Guard, but this elevated position was to be lost as time went on.

The 4th Legion participated in all three Realm invasions of the Scavenger Lands. The first invasion saw the 4th deployed in RY47, and driven back to the coast in RY53. The second invasion in RY75 saw the 4th joined by three other Legions. While the 6th Imperial Legion and 9th Imperial Legion besieged Lookshy, the 4th advanced deeper into the Scavenger Lands, accumulating victories until Lookshyan forces met them in battle at the conjunction of the Yellow River and the Rolling River in RY76, and sent them fleeing in broken retreat.

The third Realm invasion, taking place in RY88, saw the 4th Legion joined by six others in a final attempt to bring the Scavenger Lands to heel. Local guerrillas tied down the 4th's advance, but twice-bloodied its Strategoi Vondy Beulen keeps the core of his forces conservatively deployed. The reason for this becomes apparent in RY89, when the order is given for the 4th to reinforce the Empress' Own Guard against Lookshyan forces at Melevhil as Realm forces seek to stave off retreat. Strategoi Vondy instead defects to Lookshy with three dragons of the 4th, destroying the supplies of the remaining dragons. The 4th falls back disorganized to the coast, where the Empress strips them of their place in the Imperial Guard and declines to redeploy them back to the Isle. The 4th Legion will remain in the Threshold until RY768.

For centuries the 4th Legion was regarded as a disgrace, barely better than the Red Piss, deployed in various posts across the Northeastern Threshold. Several generals made efforts to reform the Legion, which had some success, finally culminating in their grand victory in the Campaign against the Anathema-Voivode under strategoi Sesus Dochao and ascent to take the garrison of the Imperial City from the 1st Imperial Legion.
