Crabbat

Crabbats are winged crabs originating from the isle of Carcini in the Western Threshold. The size of a fist with wings folded, crabbats feed on a diet of mostly fruit which they cut from trees with their sharp claws before lapping up the resulting mush after they've fallen to the ground. Their shells and claws provide natural defenses, and while not particularly aggressive they fly awkwardly and at human height, making collisions possible: the claws of a panicked crabbat can cause significant scarring to a human face.

The natives of Carcini will often gild the shells of deceased crabbats in precious metals to create brooches and other jewelry. From approximately RY440 to RY510, crabbat neck clasps became a fashion trend in the Scarlet Dynasty, and while that popularity has faded some Dynasts will still favour a crabbat neck clasp as an open sign of decadence or ostentation.
