Spiritual Drill

The Spiritual Drills were complex works of artifice, devised by the Solar Exalted in the First Age. These massive rigs, with drills of Soulsteel lubricated with Transmogrified Alienation, were able to pierce through Creation itself to reach the Underworld.

Deployed over gravesites and Shadowlands where the link between Underworld and Creation was strongest, the Drills could dig a passage, and then project harmonic pulses of prayer to repel the Underworld's denizens and secure the area, creating a space for research facilities to be raised and an opening through which people and goods might move from one to the other. Their digging done, the Drills then served as conduits to draw out necrotic Essence for use in Creation.

The Drills were responsible for much of the research into the Underworld carried out in the First Age, and texts on such subjects owe a great deal to this work. The Usurpation, however, put an end to the Drills and the associated research, the Dragonblooded seeking to dismantle such dangerous technologies. These efforts were successful, though often at great cost, with most disabled Drills torn apart by the necrotic energies flowing through them, opening and expanding the Shadowlands in which they sat.
