Great Houses are those lines within the Scarlet Dynasty granted the highest status by order of the Scarlet Empress, often descending from a favoured child or lover (though, particularly in the early days of the Realm, some were rooted in the powerful remnant Gentes who had sworn loyalty to the Empress following the Fair Folk Invasion).

Only Great Houses may seat representatives in the Greater Chamber of the Deliberative, rule over Dominions, sponsor Legions or Fleets, hold satrapies, request personal audiences with the Throne, oversee manses and demesnes on the Blessed Isle, and many other privileges.
