A Varangian military account written in the form of a poetic ballad, the Scattering of Five seems a description of a Varang military campaign to engage and suppress massed cattle raiders encroaching from neighbouring Harborhead. It is not a bad work, in poetic terms, beginning by describing the skirmishing tactics of the Harbourhead raiders, said to number ten thousand strong, who stole much cattle but were brought to battle by the ranks of elephants and firewands, which obliterated their ranks by maintaining ordered discipline.

A note from Mnemon Akarash, the translator of the text, states that the author, an aide-de-camp for a ranking general who had in the past prepared a number of military accounts for study, lost his posting with the military of Yane for using the writing style of the performing castes to prepare a military report.
