The Flying Scale Formation is a tactic sometimes employed by light cavalry forces (such as the Delzahn, D’Hennish, and Marukani), similar to the heavier Fish Scale Formation. The formation involves a wedge, with spear-armed cavalry on its outer edge and mounted archers in the center. These archers provide a preliminary volley during the charge, and can switch to blades once the spears have broken the enemy line apart.

The formation is lighter than the Fish Scale, making it more maneuverable but also more vulnerable, so it is rarely used for frontal charges, instead being employed for flanking attacks.
