Training of an animal is a form of Social combat, using the trainer’s (highest of Charisma or Manipulation) and (Survival + appropriate specialties), rolled against the animal’s MDV (WP + Integrity... animals have no ‘Parry’ MDV, unless they are ata-beasts). Normal benefits are accorded based upon Motivations and Intimacies (the Motivation of a domestic animal is the following by default: To achieve comfort and happiness).
Success allows the trainer to either compel a behaviour from the animal for a scene (so long as it does not violate Motivation), to remove an Intimacy from an animal (will spend WP to resist), to add an additional Intimacy to the animal, or to add 1 experience point to the animal for use in acquiring new specialties. The former two can be accomplished in an hour or so, while the latter two actions have a duration of one week. An animal may not have more Intimacies than its willpower without use of Charms to add them.
Animal Training Example 1: V’neef Petros decides to train his new dog so that it is loyal to its breeder. He rolls Charisma + Survival, and scores 5 successes against the dog’s MDV of 4. The dog gains the Intimacy ‘Petros (loyalty)’.
Animal Training Example 2: Petros decides to train his new dog in the art of tracking, aiming for a skilled tracker (with a specialty in Survival: Tracking x3). He rolls Charisma + Survival, and scores 5 successes against the dog’s MDV of 3 (recall the ‘Petros’ Intimacy). The dog gains a point of experience and spends it on Survival: Tracking.
