The nature of Creation, and most other realms outside the shapeless expanses of the Wyld, is Essence. Interactions of Essence are at the root of all things, and life itself is merely a complex interaction of motes and theology.
Because of this, blood itself is suffused with Essence, and its consumption of use to those who channel its power directly such as spirits or the Exalted. For every level of lethal damage inflicted, from which blood is consumed, a character regains one mote of Essence. This includes Dying levels, so long as the victim is not an Extra. Unintelligent animals and bodies that have been dead more than one minute offer no Essence, but the blood-equivalent of spirits and Fair Folk can be consumed for 2x the normal motes, as these beings are formed of essence in a purer form.
