Rainflames are a type of gemstone, though to form when dragon lines of fire and water essence collide under influence of Wyld energies, found most commonly in the ground near the isolated oases of the Deep South.

Rainflame gems consist of a flickering red light within a dark blue crystal, considered beautiful though providing little actual illumination (unlike the brighter-glowing Glowstones). Grinding the gems into powder produces flickers of light as motes of essence are released, but consuming the gems or their dust (by eating, snorting, injecting, or the like) provides no motes nor any effect different from doing the same with desert sand. However, the secret of Rainflame can be accessed when a small amount of the dust is mixed with wax or tallow to make a candle.

The flame of a rainflame candle will twist and writhe with energy, colour shifting through hues from deep purple through reds and yellows to pure white.

While this is a beautiful effect, those who breathe in the smoke from the flame will experience the true effects of rainflame. A rainflame user’s body temperature quickly begins to increase, and along with it their ability to resist heat and flame, burning sensations transforming from source of pain to source of pleasure.

After the effect wears off, the user will suffer a cooling of their body temperature, and a sluggishness of mind and logical abilities, until their body’s temperature has some time to return to its normal state. Repeated use of rainflame will cause this withdrawal to worsen, their body’s natural temperature becoming lower and lower, this lowering producing great discomfort along with mental sluggishness. In the most extreme cases, the user will eventually freeze to death, no matter how warm their surroundings.

A dangerous drug, Rainflame can be found across Creation. The bulk of production takes place in the city of Gem, candles carried by Guild caravans out to the coastal cities of the South and from there to trade ports elsewhere in Creation.
