This [[Thousand Scales]] department's sole task is the maintenance of the secure vault in which are stored the standard measurement references of the Realm: the '''Poundstone''', the '''Yardstick''', and the '''Milechain''' being amongst the best-known. Those wishing to create their own official measuring instruments must undergo a complex process of forms, fees, and verifications before being allowed access to the references so they might copy their characteristics and receive the Ministry's seal, which proves their measures to be properly vetted and is thus a vital thing for those involved in the trade and shipment of goods or allocation of land plots. 
 

The vault also includes the standard weights for jade coins, against which the Realm's mints and the [[Imperial Treasury]] must match the coins in general circulation. These are taken out to provide the [[Imperial Magistrates]] with evidence in cases of monetary fraud such as bar-shaving, and are under guard by four elite soldiers, one each from the [[2nd Imperial Legion]], [[3rd Imperial Legion]], [[6th Imperial Legion]], and [[9th Imperial Legion]].
