While some Traits such as [[Attributes]] are broad and innate to most Characters to one extent or another, Abilities are learned (through study, practice, or experience), starting from 0 by default.

Lack of dots in an Ability means a Character lacks the specific knowledge or experience to effectively accomplish a task. In most cases, their attempt suffers a two-die penalty to any dice pools involving the Ability (with the [[Exalted]] and other magical beings ignoring this penalty), but in others lack of the Ability can make it impossible to make such rolls at all.

Abilities are trained by way of accumulating [[Specialty|Specialties]], narrow subsets of the wider skill the Ability represents. For more information, see: [[Training]].
